Young Eagles

The EAA Young Eagles program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people, ages 8 - 17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane.  These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers.  Since 1992, more than 2 million Young Eagles have  enjoyed a flight through the program.  Young Eagles have been registered in more  than 90 different countries and have been flown by nearly 40,000 volunteer pilots.

FAQs

Who qualifies for a young eagle flight?
Anyone between the ages of 8-17
What if those interested in a flight are over 17?
For those over 18, we can arrange to do an Eagle Flight.  These are very similar, but focus more on those with a true interest in flying.
How do I schedule a flight?
To schedule a flight, reach out to our Young Eagles Coordinator, who's contact information can be found at the bottom of this page.  Depending on the situation, we can arrange for a 1-on-1 meeting with a pilot, or we may have a rally scheduled in the near future where we will be flying a larger number of kids in one day.
What is a young eagles rally?
At a rally, we tend to fly several kids in one day.  In addition to the flight itself, we may have other activities and recourse available to the kids at the event than we might have at a 1-on-1 meeting.  What occurs at a rally depends solely on what resources we have available on each date.  All rallies will be published to our website calendar.
How do I register for a young eagle rally?
We have recently switched to an online registration system at youngeaglesday.com.
As a parent, do I have to be present for the flight?
Yes.  In order to go up for a flight, everyone must fill out a registration form, either online or in person.  Once at the event, we will have a parent or legal guardian sign a waiver prior to the flight.
I have completed my young eagle flight and had a blast!  What are my next steps?
The next steps for a young eagle include getting a free EAA student membership, enroll in EAA AeroEducate and Sporty's Learn to Fly Course, and work your way towards a free flight lesson with a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI).
How can I get involved in the local EAA Chapter?
Join our chapter!  We can add you to the email list to get notification about events and receive our monthly newsletter.  In addition to rallies, we also hold a month chapter meeting at the Walterboro airport every second Saturday of the month starting at 10am.  At a typical meeting, we will have a presentation of some sort, the regular meeting topics, and then follow up with socializing and lunch.
Does EAA offer any scholarships?
We are currently offering a scholarship from our local EAA chapter to one student age 16 or older.  To submit an application, please click here.  In addition, the national EAA organization does offer a few scholarships that can be found on their scholarship website.
How do I become a ground volunteer for these events?
To become a ground volunteer, please reach out to our Young Eagles Coordinator.  To be a volunteer, you will need to be an EAA member.  It is also preferred that you have the background check and youth training.  If you are interested in becoming a young eagle volunteer, please fill out this survey by clicking here.
How do I become a volunteer pilot for these rallies
To become a young eagles pilot, please reach out to our Young Eagles Coordinator.  In addition to the ground volunteer requirements, you must also be a certified pilot and have liability insurance on your aircraft.  For more information on the requirenments for young eagle pilots, check out click here.  If you are interested in becoming a young eagle volunteer, please fill out this survey by clicking here.

Elizabeth "Liz" Birch was introduced to aviation at age 12 through the Young Eagles program.  In a little over 10 years, Liz has become an ATP (Airline Transport Pilot), CFI (Certified Flight Instructor), CFII (Certified Flight Instructor, Instrument), and MEI (Multi-Engine Instructor).  She has worked as a First Officer on Regional Jets for Air Wisconsin Airlines.  She has a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics with a Major in Commercial Aviation from the University of North Dakota.  She has also worked as a flight instructor locally for CRAFT Flight Training.  She is a veteran pilot of numerous Young Eagle flights and oh, when she is not doing all the above, she flies competition aerobatics.

Participation is easy. Simply go online to www.eaa.org, select Youth, then Young Eagle Flights (or click on the logo to the left) to learn more about the program, how it works and how to use it.  It can also help you find the closest volunteer pilots. From there, arrange a convenient time to go flying.  After your flight use the code in your log book (supplied with the flight) to access, free, the "Sporty's" learn to fly course.  We hope you enjoy a Young Eagles introduction to the exciting world of aviation. Make sure you come back to visit  this web site after your flight to continue exploring the wonderful world of  aviation!
Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 477 Young Eagle pilots have flown over 320 Young Eagles since 1992.
